Overview
The structure of this walkthrough, as with all of them, matches that of the IRC guide, providing more detailed information for the client in question. You may wish
to consult with the glossary in the IRC guide for explanations of terminology not covered directly in the guide.
Getting Started with Gaim
Availability: Gaim is available for *NIX and Windows. This tutorial is based on Gaim for Windows, but should also apply to the *NIX version.
When you first load Gaim, you are presented with the AIM Login dialog:
 The Login dialog |
However, you will be using it for IRC, so you will need to set it up for that instead – to do this, you will need to open the Account Editor window by clicking
the Accounts button. Those who already have Gaim set up and installed will find the Account Editor under the Tools menu in the Buddy List window.
 The Account Editor |
The next step is to create a new account in Gaim, for IRC, so click the Add button. You will see the Modify Account window.
 Creating a new account |
Here, you fill out your account details. Firstly, under Protocol, select IRC. Then under screenname, enter your chosen IRC nick. Skip Alias, Password and Remember
Password. If you want to have Gaim automatically connect to SlashNET when you launch it, check Auto-Login.
Then, under IRC Options, enter a server name, such as the generic irc.slashnet.org. Leave the port and encoding settings alone unless you have reason to do otherwise.
Then click OK to confirm. The new account will now show up in the Account Editor window. Note that seeing as you didn’t (and couldn’t) name the account, it
will henceforth be listed in Gaim as screenname(IRC). You can now connect to IRC, by checking the Online checkbox for the account; a progress window will
appear during connecting, although Gaim does not have an IRC console. Close the Account Editor window.
You will now see a Buddy List window on the screen; this is primarily for the instant messaging facilities of Gaim, but you also need to use it for IRC. To join an
IRC channel, select Join A Chat from the File menu of the Buddy List – the Join Chat dialog will appear:
 Joining a chat |
Enter in the channel name to join, ignoring the password box. Click OK. A tabbed conversations window will now appear, with a tab for #joyoftech:

Using Gaim
Getting accustomed to Gaim
Gaim is a little different to other IRC clients in general – its IRC facilities are limited, and generally do not match that of any other IRC clients, nor some
of the things mentioned in the guide. An overhaul of IRC in Gaim is underway, though, fortunately. For further details on operating Gaim, refer to the documentation or
ask someone who knows more about Gaim.
Something to note, though, is the way Gaim deals with rejoining channels – instead of using a /join command in your on-connect commands list to join
each time you connect, you add the conversation (channel) to the buddy list (if your version of Gaim is new enough). How, I do not know – I have never encountered
the option anywhere.
Finally, note that closing the Buddy List window does not exit Gaim – to do this, right-click on Gaim’s System Tray icon and select Exit, as shown below:
